Paul Crawford
DIRECTOR/CURATOR - curator@pentictonartgallery.com
For more than three decades, Paul Crawford has been a driving force and a dedicated presence in British Columbia's vibrant visual arts community. With a degree in art history from the University of Victoria and a wealth of lifelong experience, his expertise encompasses a wide range of disciplines within the art world. As a collector, scholar, lecturer, gallery owner, art consultant, independent curator, juror, and board member, Paul's enduring passion and unwavering commitment have left an unmistakable imprint on the ever-evolving artistic landscape of the region.
From 2002 to 2006, Paul's visionary leadership as the Director/Curator of the Grand Forks Art Gallery initiated the gallery's relocation journey from its humble basement location in the library to its present-day home, a beautifully renovated former courthouse. As the Director/Curator of the Penticton Art Gallery, his curatorial prowess shines through an extraordinary portfolio of exhibitions that celebrate the richness and diversity of artistic practices. With a keen eye for detail and a discerning taste, Paul has masterfully curated over 300 exhibitions, each offering a captivating blend of historical and contemporary works by talented local and international artists.
Among some of his notable recent achievements, Paul co-curated the powerful exhibition "Behind the Lines: Contemporary Syrian Art" with Humam Alsalim. Showcasing 100 works by 19 contemporary Syrian artists, including 13 still residing in Syria, the exhibition has traveled to 18 venues across Western Canada and attracted over 50,000 visitors. Paul also collaborated with Humam Alsalim on the international mail art exhibition "You Are Not Alone," which received over 300 submissions from around the world and was showcased in Penticton and Berlin. In 2020, amidst the challenges of COVID-19, Paul curated the largest exhibition to date of renowned artist Bob Ross, drawing over 15,000 visitors despite capacity restrictions. This was followed by a substantial retrospective exhibition on the life and career of Buffy Sainte Marie, which has since traveled to notable venues such as the National Arts Centre in Ottawa and the National Music Centre in Calgary.
Beyond his curatorial work, Paul actively contributes to community building through his involvement on various boards and committees. He serves on the Arts Council of Greater Victoria, The Boundary District Arts Council, The Penticton and District Community Arts Council, Island Mountain Arts, The City of Penticton's Arts, Creative & Cultural Innovations Committee, the Joseph Plaskett Foundation, The Okanagan School of the Arts, the ArtsWells Festival, the Festival of Freedom at the Forks, Folkanagan, the Dream Café, Route 97 Culture, and the Canadian Art Preservation Foundation. In the fall of 2021, he played a key role in launching the Ignite the Arts Festival, an annual ten-day celebration of art and culture held each spring in Penticton. Through his board appointments and volunteer efforts, Paul contributes his expertise to help shape the direction of these organizations, build a stronger community, and foster greater engagement by facilitating connection and collaboration within the arts sector.
Since his arrival in Penticton in 2006, Paul has worked tirelessly to elevate the Penticton Art Gallery into a dynamic hub for artistic exploration, community engagement, and cultural enrichment. With his visionary curation and diverse programming, the gallery has become a magnet for both local and international artists, captivating audiences with compelling and immersive exhibitions. Over the past year, Paul has been working on fostering an ongoing artistic exchange between Oaxaca, Mexico, and the vibrant South Okanagan region, fostering a rich and dynamic cultural dialogue that transcends borders and enriches both communities.
Paul's unwavering passion and commitment have garnered him well-deserved recognition from his peers and the community. His remarkable contributions to the arts were honored in 2017 when he received the prestigious Change Maker Award from the British Columbia Museums Association, acknowledging his transformative impact as a cultural professional in the province. In 2020, the Penticton & Wine Country Chamber of Commerce bestowed upon Paul the esteemed Business Leader of the Year award, recognizing his exemplary leadership and dedication. Furthermore, in 2021, his outstanding service to the arts led to his nomination for the Distinguished Service Award by the BC Museums Association, further underscoring his significant contributions to the cultural landscape.
Paul Crawford's passion, expertise, and unwavering dedication continue to shape and elevate the arts community here in Penticton and across British Columbia. With his wealth of experience, discerning eye, and tireless advocacy for the arts, he leaves an indelible mark on the artistic landscape of Penticton and beyond. His commitment to promoting and celebrating art inspires both artists and art enthusiasts, creating a lasting impact on the cultural fabric of the community.
