Princess Margaret Secondary | With These 10 Fingers...

In our ongoing commitment to support and celebrate the creative vision of the our community's youth, the gallery is happy to once again partner with Brad Gibson and the Visual Arts Department of Princess Margaret Secondary School to present this year's exhibition, With These 10 Fingers...

A select group of graduating students were asked to create a work of art for their final project based solely on a random piece of wood and the task of completing the phrase "with these 10 fingers..." Each student was given total freedom to interpret and address this challenge in their own unique way by using and altering the piece of wood in any way they saw fit. In doing so, Brad challenged each student to both create and solve a visual problem based upon their point of view and personal interpretation of the challenge put to them.

Projects such as this push the limits of creative exploration as the individuals strive to go beyond conventionally held beliefs and ideas of what art is. My hope is these students will take with them the lessons learned from this exercise and incorporate them into their future creative endeavours. We should all question the way we look at the world around us and how we choose to interact with those objects which have no recognisable value. In considering the question I am reminded once again of the mantra, "Reduce, Reuse and Recycle". The next time I am ready to cast aside an object which has seeming exhausted its recognisable value, I too will challenge myself to look beyond the obvious and see the potential which lies untapped.
