Topics & Tea

Wednesday September 27th, 2017 at 2-3 pm

In 2007 the first Mental Health Art Exhibition at the Penticton Art Gallery grew out of a program run by Dr Mark Welch for persons hospitalized at Penticton Regional Hospital.  Now, 10 years later, the annual exhibition continues, and is slated around the time of Mental Illness Awareness Week (Oct 1-7, 2017).  The contributors are community members who may have a mental illness, as well as members of the general public who have had mental health challenges.  Each piece in the exhibition reflects the impact of these challenges on the individual.  For some artists, their work represents their struggles; for others it provides relief from their illness.  This exhibition aims to reduce the stigma about mental illness by educating the public.

Sharon Evans is the President of the Mental Wellness Centre, BC Schizophrenia Society – Penticton Branch.
