Gerhard Kahrmann's interest in photography began in Germany when he bought his first camera in 1950 at the age of fifteen. His involvement with photography has grown steadily since coming to Canada. He is largely self-taught but has attended seminars and has studied at the new York Institute of Photography.
Together with his wife Eva, Gerhard operated a photo and art supply retail business in Penticton, BC.
Gerhard has had photos exhibited in the annual Calgary Stampede International Salon of Pictorial Photography. He had a one man show at the Penticton Art Gallery in 1974 and joint exhibitions in 1983 and 1988. His photographs have been published in B.C. Outdoors, Western Living, Nature Canada and Harrowsmith. His work has also appeared in Nature's Children books and in the 1988Calendar of West Kootenay Power. His photographs are in private collections in Germany, the United States, Switzerland, Norway and Canada.
