He was born December 26, 1955. He took grade 12 and 13 art during grade 11 in Port Hope, Ontario. In 1973 he received the Emily C. Faye Art Award. Leighton moved to Penticton with his family where he completed Grade 12 and was awarded a bursary for continued studies. In 1974 he enrolled in Visual Arts at the University of Victoria and in 1975 he received the President Award. He then completed his Degree year. He has a major in Art History - aesthetics existing in the American Abstract Expressionist Movement.
